Warts Wrong With Me?
Even in fairy tales, warts are as unwelcome as, well…trolls, maybe. That’s because these non-cancerous skin growths have always been considered tiny benchmarks to tell the beautiful (e.g. princesses) from the out-and-out hideous (e.g. witches), perhaps owing plenty to the ugly, cauliflower-like appearance of them. In real life, however, warts possess characteristics that you’d need to be more concerned about aside from obviously aesthetic reasons. This is mainly due to its being classified as a Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), the very same bugger that doles out genital warts with the single-mindedness of a salmon swimming upstream, once spread via unprotected sexual intercourse. Not only will genital warts make your privates look unsightly, but they might just plant the seeds for fatal cervical cancer if left untreated.
In the same vein, skin-centric warts are passed through direct contact, and usually appear as a crop of flat, flesh-colored skin bumps. You can get warts on your face if you use another person’s towel, loofah, powder puff, or other personal hygienic products used directly on the skin. They can also appear on your arms, hands, legs, or feet. More common warts can be found on your fingers or at the backs of your hands, appearing like little black dots that feel like fleshy seeds. Those that could grow on the soles of your feet are more difficult to ignore, however. These are called plantar warts, and could be further aggravated due to our very annoying human tendency to be on our feet all the time.
How to deal with this cursed phenomenon? There are several ways, from over-the-counter ones, to merely waiting it out until the warts disappear on their own, to other more expensive, time-consuming ones. Obviously, it all depends on the kind of warts you do already have. Genital warts, of course, need more attention than their lesser lethal cousins, but professional medical help need to be sought for this. Chemical treatments, laser, or even surgery might be utilized, and are more expensive and may be more painful to get rid off.
Regardless of where they might appear, never ignore warts, no matter how tiny they seem to be at the moment. The little things have a tendency to grow and be painful, or even bleed over time. For warts on your hands, arms, feet, or legs, you can buy prescribed salicylic acid over the counter. Bear in mind, however, that even this relatively inexpensive, DIY way to treat your warts requires a bit of patience and discipline. You would need to apply this daily after your bath, and when your skin is still slightly damp (but not soaking wet). Once you notice that the warts have hardened considerably after a few weeks of such treatment, you can pumice the dead “crusts” away and be more careful about what you come in contact with in the future to prevent recurrences.
Speaking of DIY (do-it-yourself) treatments, there’s even a MacGyver approach to treating warts. Think duct tape, Mac’s personal choice for a ubiquitous tool. What you’ll need to do is to put a patch of tape over a cluster of warts to further irritate the skin, and then leave it for about a week if you can stand it. Your immune system will target this patch. After about a week, remove the duct tape and then wash the warty area with water, while running a pumice stone over it. Let the area breathe for about a day, and then continue with the duct tape schedule until the warts are fully gone.
