Breast Reduction

Previous Tip: Cellulite Removal
Next Tip: Breast Implants

Breast reduction surgery is undertaken by women who have very large breasts that can cause severe pain. Overly large breasts can also cause serious medical problems to the back and neck which is caused by the weight of the breasts. Other serious problems that can result from this type of problem can include difficulty breathing and severe skin irritation.

The technically term for breast reduction surgery is called mammaplasty and was created to combat all of these problems. The surgeon makes an incision into the breasts and removes built up fat, tissue, and the excess skin from the breasts which in turn makes them lighter and much firmer. The recovery time from this type of surgery is typically one to three weeks during which time the breasts will be tender and there will be slight bruising.

The usually candidate for this type of procedure is a woman with fully developed breasts that are causing the woman significant concern. The majority of the concern is related to medical problems or to the fact that the breasts drastically reduce the ability of the patient to perform activities in their daily life without severe discomfort. This surgery is usually always performed to prevent a medical problem rather than to simply improve the physical image of a person.

The Risks
Breast reduction can be a dangerous procedure and as with any surgery there are a number of risks involved with the operation. The most common risks associated with this surgery is bleeding, the possibility of infection, and a diverse reaction to the anesthesia used to sedate the patient during surgery. Other complications that can arise are soreness in the nipples, loss of feeling in the nipple and breast, and the scarring caused by the breast reduction surgery.

Breast reduction surgery is not recommended for women who are planning on breast feeding in the future as the surgery may make this impossible. The cause behind is the fact that the majority of the milk creation glands are removed during the surgery.
