Breast Implantation; Post-Surgery Conditions
Your reservations for opting for breast implants may be grounded on the post-surgery experience which you may have. If this is the case, be assured that the procedure itself is virtually painless, since you are usually under an anesthetic during the surgery. The aftermath is another story, though. While you may experience some discomfort during the recovery period, as long as you deal with them as instructed by your surgeon, you can consider these as temporary setbacks for a benefit which was well worth the effort.
You may feel a wave of emotion as soon as you recover from the anesthetic, pleasant or otherwise. This will depend on your distinct personality and your body’s reaction to the medication. You may also feel some physical discomfort, but these can be easily managed with the painkillers you were prescribed for. And since you probably have ice packs over your breasts to help ease the swelling, you will feel the cold, especially since it is enhanced by the after effects of the medication. A warm blanket should help ease the chills, so bring one or request for it.
After you are released from the hospital, your surgeon will require you to keep ice packs close to your breasts for the next 48 hours, maybe more; after which you will be asked to replace them with warm compresses until the swelling has subsided. Drainage tubes may be inserted on the incision areas to allow the fluids to come out; these, however, are removed on your next follow-up visit, about a couple of days following the surgery. Up to this point, and for the following weeks, you will be wearing a surgical bra with bandages to keep the breasts immobile. Make sure that you take care of the suture wounds properly; follow your surgeon’s instructions, and avoid irritating the areas with applications of creams and lotions.
Follow your regular antibiotic medication schedule, and monitor your body temperature for sudden changes; infection can cause it to rise above normal levels. The pain you experience will depend on your threshold, but recovery is noticeably easier with sub-glandular than with sub-muscular breast implants. Your pain medication can ease the pain significantly as long as you take them as instructed. And since the procedure is an invasive one, breast implantation involves inflammation; this is the body’s natural recuperative reaction, and you will experience for the next few months in diminishing degrees. Avoid taking diuretics, but do keep yourself moderately mobile and constantly hydrated.
While your doctor recommends that you maintain moderate activity during recuperation, one thing which you cannot do is raise your arms over your head; this can agitate the healing wounds and delay the recovery. Your usual routines are consequently hampered with such a disability. Avoid strenuous activity which can cause blood pressure to increase and the bleeding to be exacerbated. Keep yourself within a reasonable pace for the next four weeks, or until your doctor permits you to go back to your usual routine. And even if you feel numbness or an enhanced nipple sensitivity, take these in stride with the appropriate treatments; the end to your discomfort is near, and then you will be able to appreciate your newly-gained firmer, fuller breasts.
