Breast Implant Myths Debunked

Breast augmentation is a procedure which has been practiced successfully for decades, but popular and unpopular public opinion have sprouted out numerous rumors about its safety and effectiveness, to the point that the rumors have turned into urban myths. While there are exceptional cases which prove some of the following myths as facts, these could’ve been easily avoided if the procedure was performed under ideal conditions, and by a qualified doctor. They nonetheless persist; but you can spread the word, and debunk the myths.

There is a prevalent rumor that silicone implants are harmful for the body. In actuality, silicone implants belong to the most researched medical implements, and years of study has made them that much more safe and effective. Silicone is entirely compatible with the human body, and is approved for use by credible regulatory agencies in the most progressive countries. On this note, there is also no concrete evidence which proves that breast implants can cause breast cancer in women.

Implants are also rumored to cause the breasts to sag faster; actually, breasts sag due to other factors, such as gravity and the collagen structure inside the skin, which naturally breaks down with the aging process. Implanted and natural breasts both follow the same conditions. Implants also last far longer than they are believed to; the average lifespan of breast implants reaches up to twenty-five years in ideal cases.

While some breast augmentation cases result in an effect which is far worse than the condition before the procedure, it is not true that everyone can tell if someone has breast implants. A well-planned and executed operation should result in breasts which look and feel natural. Scars are also virtually invisible through competent surgical procedures; the implants are placed by insertion through a minor incision, the latter made on the area where the surgeon deems appropriate. Implants which result in breasts which are too firm or tough to the touch are product of rush jobs, performed by under-qualified or unlicensed practitioners.

The pain which allegedly comes with breast augmentation procedure has caused women to shrink away from the prospect of better-looking breasts more than any other reason. It is true that there is pain which comes with surgery, but the medical profession is very much competent in dealing with it, through medications which take the patient’s physical condition and tolerance in full account. The recovery period involved after the procedure may vary between patients, but it is not true that it takes a month to fully recuperate from surgery; most patients are capable of full mobility in as little as two days post-operation, and can go back to their normal routine in as little as five days.

Probably the most sensational and widely-circulated myths alleges that breast implants explode at high altitudes. This rumor is based on the premise that the low pressure conditions cause the implants to expand to the point of bursting. This myth has already been debunked; implants do expand in such situations, but in altitudes too high for a person to survive, and the expansion is not enough to cause them to burst.
